Coronation Bells and the May update from the Tower.

Kirkburton Bellringers marked the Coronation with a weekend of special ringing on our own bells and assisted with ringing at other local towers.

The bells were raised on Saturday morning and were rung for 45 minutes immediately before the service in Westminster Abbey. The ringing was entirely carried out by our own team of ringers. We alternated the band so that everyone had the opportunity to ring for this historic occasion. A photograph of the team was taken afterwards in front of the west door. We chose this location as it mirrors a photo in the Tower of the Kirkburton band in the 19th Century, and we plan to display this photograph alongside it.

On the morning of  Sunday 7th we rang for the special service the Church held to mark the Coronation.

Finally on Sunday afternoon our more experienced ringers joined with some of our regular Wednesday practice night helpers to attempt a quarter peal of 1288 changes of Grandsire Triples. This was rung successfully in 48 minutes, the striking being of a very good standard throughout. We felt this showcased our wonderful ring of bells and that the ringing was of a standard that reflected such an important national occasion.

Our ringers that we have recruited and trained since we returned after the pandemic have made such progress that they were able to assist with Coronation ringing at Shelley, Almondbury, Kirkheaton and Lindley.

For the rest of the month our ringing will be as follows.

Practice: Wednesday: 7.00 to 8.30

Sundays: 10.15 to 11.00.

Monday 29th May: Wedding. Ringing commences 11.30

Our next Quarter Peal attempt will be following the morning service on Trinity Sunday. June 4th. Start time will be posted in the June update.
